During ICED24, IJAD editorial team is organizing a retreat that will take place before the Conference in Nairobi, Kenya. The retreat shall be hybrid to enable wide participation.
The main goal of the writing retreat is to stimulate scholarly writing about educational development. For a definition of educational development, please see IJAD aims and scope. As importantly, we hope to broaden the diversity of research into academic development. Accordingly, we plan to support four participants with small needs-based scholarships to cover the cost of the writing retreat registration.
The retreat shall be hybrid to enable wide participation.
Participants will work on their own writing, and both provide and as well as receive feedback from a small group of peers and a member of the IJAD editorial team. Writing projects must be focused on academic/educational development in higher education, but the genre and audience for these projects are wide open; there’s no expectation that participants are writing for IJAD. The retreat is open to both new and established scholars.
Before the retreat begins, each participant will complete a goal-setting worksheet and submit a short draft of the project that they will work on during the retreat. During the retreat, each participant will be part of a small writing group of 3-5 writers, facilitated by a member of the IJAD editorial team. Each writing group will meet two of the days of the retreat (Sunday and Tuesday) for peer feedback and goal setting, leaving time for writing during Monday. The remainder of the time during these three days will be dedicated to writing.

Participants will end the retreat having spent considerable time writing, will have received focused feedback on their evolving writing project, and will have established a post-retreat writing plan. Retreat participants should be prepared to focus on their writing for the entire retreat (at least 6-8 hours a day), and participants should make meaningful progress on their writing during the retreat.
The retreat will be hybrid.
The fee for the retreat will be used to offset costs related to the editors’ time for planning and hosting the retreat; the retreat is not designed to make a profit. For those participants who are planning to attend the conference in (rather than online) it is possible to meet up during Sunday and/ or Monday, lunch at own expense.
